Description of the Program:

The Master in Business and Quantitative Methods offers research-oriented masters in Finance-Accounting, Management-Marketing, and Statistics. These three separate but overlapping tracks provide students with the solid theoretical and empirical tools needed to prepare students for the PhD and careers in research and teaching.

The Master is offered jointly by the Business Administration and Statistics deparments, whose outstanding faculty and commitment to quality instruction and first-class research are a guarantee for incoming students from all over the world.

Financial Aid

The Business Administration and Statistics deparments usually offer financial aid to students in good standing in the form of tuition waivers and a stipend that is expected to be between 900 and 1000 euros per month for the 2014/15 academic year. Financial support is generally extended to those continuing into the PhD program in Management, Finance, or Statistics

Students profile

Students in this program generally have completed a Bachelor's Degree in Economics, Business Administration (with a quantitative basis), Statistics, Mathematics or Engineering. Most of them are recent graduates or have recently completed another posgraduate degree with a less academic oriented program.

The ideal candidate should possess intellectual curiosity, a strong desire to excel in an academic environment, advanced communication skills in English, and a robust quantitative background.

Aims

The master’s principal objective is to train internationally renowned researchers in all areas related to business management, finance and statistical sciences.

Placement

As a research-oriented masters program, the majority of our students continue into the PhD program. From there, we have placed students in academic positions at University College London, Erasmus University, Max Planck Institute, Lancaster University, ITAM, IESE, Instituto de Empresa, Universidad de Navarra, and Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona. Others have continued their careers in research departments at government institutions, such as the Comisión Nacional del Mercado de Valores. Some students have preferred to move to the private sector, and have found jobs at Goldman Sachs, KPMG, CommerzBank or Repsol YPF.

Overview of Courses:

The Master should be understood as the first stage of the PhD program in Finance, Management, Statistics (which is called the PhD in Business and Quantitative Methods). The PhD program is made up of two stages:

  • 2 years of coursework (the Master)
  • 3 years of thesis writing (the PhD)

The Master Program is divided into two academic years with 60 ECTS each. The Master is designed to prepare students who wish to do research in the areas of Finance/Accounting, Management/Marketing, and Statistics. Correspondigly, the coursework is organized into three different tracks with overlapping courses:

  • Finance (José Penalva, director)
  • Management (Jordi Surroca, deputy director)
  • Statistics (Michael Wiper, deputy director)

Each track has different compulsory and elective courses. You can compare all three on the main program or look at each one individually (Finance, Management, Statistics). The basic structure for all three tracks is:

First year: 60 ECTS in four terms. Twelve compulsory courses (5 ECTS each), overall 60 ECTS.

Second year: 60 ECTS in four terms. Eight courses during the first three terms, 40 ECTS.

An external seminar, depending on the main subject, of 5 ECTS and a master's thesis of 15 ECTS within the fourth term: 20 ECTS Proposed Program for the entering class 2015/16, pending confirmation
