Description of the Program:

The Master in Economics: Empirical Applications and Policies is a one year full-time official research program organised in Bilbao by The Department of Foundations of Economic Analysis II at The University of the Basque Country. Our students seek to specialize in the empirical analysis of markets: labour market, monetary market and energy markets, among other, and their connection to natural resources and environmental issues. Highly motivated students with a bachelor's degree in economics, or any other comparable undergraduate major such as engineering or mathematics, are encouraged to apply for this program.

Our students will obtain a profound understanding of the theoretical skills and the empirical tools and computational techniques that economists use to analyse data. The acquisition of skills for the empirical analyses of such markets favours the specialization of students and, therefore, their access to highly qualified jobs. Our Master is designed as a link between academic scholarship and firms demanding highly skilled human capital such as consulting firms, research centres and domestic or international public institutions, where a solid research component is required. Those who opt for a pure research career will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to begin working independently on their Ph.D. dissertations. This Master is fully taught in English.

Courses

The academic year is divided in five blocks / periods.

FIRST BLOCK: PRELIMINARIES. A first block reviews preliminary requirements and it is intended to homogenize students’ different backgrounds. This block covers introductory materials in Economics, Econometrics and Mathematics. This block lasts four weeks from mid September to mid October.

SECOND BLOCK: FUNDAMENTALS. A second block includes courses that form the basic toolkit of an economist. It includes courses in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometrics and Computational Methods. This block lasts eight weeks and ends before Christmas.

THIRD AND FORTH BLOCKS: FIELD SUBJECTS. The third and fourth blocks include courses in a wide variety of topics among which students make their choice depending on their preferences and curriculum design. The supply of topic courses will vary from year to year depending on students’ preferences and Faculty availability. A potential pool of courses would include: Economic Growth, Labour Economics, Energy Markets, Monetary Markets, Game Theory, Experimental Economics, Environmental Economics, Policy Evaluation, Cultural Economics, Auctions, Social Choice, Natural Resources, and Fiscal Policy. Each of these blocks lasts seven weeks.

FIFTH BLOCK: MASTER THESIS. The purpose is that students implement the skills acquired by writing an essay on a specific subject. Students are expected to show a particular interest in one of the topics. Under the supervision of a Faculty member, the student is required to write an essay containing both theoretical and empirical analysis of a specific economic issue. The Master Thesis must be defended orally in late July and handed in by mid-September. View examples of Past Master Theses.
