The Shuttleworth Foundation offers fellowships to individuals to implement their innovative idea for social change. In order to live in an open knowledge society with limitless possibilities for all, the foundation identifies amazing people with innovative ideas, give them a fellowship grant, and multiply the money they put into their own project by a factor of ten or more.

By finding great people, supporting and sharing their positive approaches for social change, the world will get better, faster. That is why the foundation is looking for social innovators who are open at heart, have a fresh perspective on addressing challenges, and have a very clear idea of their role in bringing about positive change. Shuttleworth is seeking brave individuals with innovative ideas to change systems, shift thinking, and apply openness in areas that are causing harm and inequity. How can you improve these systems, or replace them? What practical solutions do you have to unlock knowledge and empower citizens? Why are you the right person to turn your vision into a reality? Shuttleworth is looking forward to hearing from you.

Eligibility:

The Shuttleworth Foundation offers fellowships to individuals to implement their innovative idea for social change. The foundation is most interested in exceptional ideas at the intersection between technology, knowledge, and learning, with openness being the key requirement.

Funding:

The Shuttleworth Foundation Fellowship Program funding consists of two components for each Fellow – the fellowship grant and the project funding.

The fellowship grant covers the cost of the Fellow’s time for a year and is guaranteed to the fellow for that year. The grant amount varies and is determined by each Fellow’s salary equivalent outside of the fellowship. The project funding is USD 275,000 per Fellow per year.

About the Foundation:

The Shuttleworth Foundation was established in January 2001 by South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth as an experiment with the purpose of providing funding for people engaged in social change. While there have been various iterations of the foundation, its structure, and how it invests in social innovation, the current model employs a fellowship model where fellows are given funding commensurate with their experience to match a year's salary, allowing them to spend that year developing a particular idea.
