The British Council and the Academy for Scientific Research and Technology in Egypt announced the 2020 FameLab competition. The aim of the national FameLab competition is to identify and nurture the best talents in science communications in Egypt. Contestants are expected to deliver an entertaining and original three-minute talk in a video about any scientific topic without using PowerPoint or other electronic presentation tools, and with limited use of props. The talk must be scientifically accurate, but also engaging to a non-scientific audience.

Eligibility:

Participants must be 18 – 40 years old, Egyptian, and pursuing studies or working in a scientific field.

The competition welcomes:

  • Lecturers and researchers in science, engineering, or mathematics subjects, including specialist science teachers with a science degree.
  • People who work on applying science, engineering technology, or mathematics (e.g. patent clerks, statisticians, consultants to industry).
  • University students of science, mathematics, or engineering 18 or over.
  • People who apply science, mathematics, or engineering in the armed forces or government bodies.
  • People who apply science, engineering, or mathematics in industry or business.

Who can’t Participate in the competition:

  • Employees of the British Council and Academy for Scientific Research and Technology and their next of kin are not allowed to participate in the competition.
  • Press or PR officers, even for science-related organizations, Journalists, and broadcasters (as their main or only job) are not allowed to participate in the competition.
  • Artists who work on science-related themes are not allowed to participate in the competition.
  • Performers whose shows are about science or engineering are not allowed to participate in the competition.
  • Science center staff who work exclusively or mainly with the public are not allowed to participate in the competition.

Terms and Conditions:

  • Candidates who fail to submit their video by the 2 Jan 2021, will be considered out of the competition.
  • Quality of video will not be considered, you need to submit a video which has clear sound and image to facilitate the screening process, you can use your mobile phone.
  • The jury will qualify applicants from the submitted videos to participate in the Semi-finals live event in Cairo.
  • Successful applicants will be notified by email and will be requested to prepare a new 3 minutes talk to be performed on stage in the Semi-finals live event.
  • The talk in the digital video, semifinals, and the Egypt Final Competition must be delivered in the Arabic language.
  • The competition winner will be announced on the British Council website www.britishcouncil.org.eg. The winners will also be notified in writing through the email address provided on their application form.

Prizes:

The prize for the participants who qualify from the semifinal round is to attend a weekend MasterClass in Science Communication, where they will have the opportunity to work with a certified MasterClass science communicator/media trainer to improve their presentation skills. The finalists must attend the MasterClass in full; otherwise, they will lose their places in the Egypt Final Competition.

The winner will receive a trophy. There will also be audience vote prizes and prizes to the finalists and the winner provided by the Academy of Scientific Research and technology.
