An opportunity to have an internship at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. This internship will be in accelerated chemistries in high voltage sprays of water.

The Goals of Internship:

The internship wants to develop a reactor based on ESI to investigate acid-catalyzed reactions towards the goal of producing high-value chemicals, for example, compounds used in the pharmaceutical industry. Specifically, the Summer Intern will investigate operational parameters, including the ionic strength and pH of water, ESI voltage, coaxial gas-flow rate, length of the reactor, etc, to optimize conditions based on reactions, such as the Fries Rearrangement of phenylacetate. The reaction products will be analyzed through nuclear magnetic resonance and chromatography techniques.

Requirements:

  • The intern should be knowledgeable in chemical engineering, driven by curiosity, hard-working, and thrive in a multicultural work environment.
  • you must complete a minimum of your third year of baccalaureate studies OR completed your baccalaureate (Bachelor’s degree) OR be pursuing a post-baccalaureate (Master’s degree). Currently enrolled KAUST students, KAUST Alumni, students who are currently in a Ph.D. program or those who have earned a Ph.D. are not eligible to participate.
  • You should have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) that exceeds 3.50 /4.00 ( 14/20: Equivalent to ECTS B) with some research projects requiring a 3.60 or higher.
  • Demonstrated English reading comprehension, speaking, listening and writing abilities.

Funding:

KAUST VSRP visiting students will receive the following:

  1. Monthly living allowance ( $1000 ).
  2. Round-trip airfare to/from city of departure-Jeddah (KAUST).
  3. Health insurance.
  4. Private bedroom and bath in a shared residential suite.
  5. Visa fees (Students must have valid passport).
  6. Access to community recreational resources.
  7. Social and cultural activities.
  8. The VSRP intern will work with a senior graduate student and learn the following skills:
  • Laboratory experiments: ESI-MS, ESI reactions, voltage sources, identifying reactions of interest.
  • Theory: The basic electrostatics, data analysis, scientific writing.

About the Internship:

The Visiting Student internship Program is an opportunity for exceptionally qualified international baccalaureate and post-baccalaureate students to conduct research with faculty mentors in selected areas of basic and applied research projects. The duration of the program ranges from between three and six months, depending on the research project. Arrival date must be a minimum of 6 weeks after the date of submission. Faculty name of this internship is Himanshu Mishra and the Field of study is Environmental and Materials Science.
