LogiCS, in cooperation with the Vienna University of Technology, invites exceptionally talented and motivated students from all over the world to apply for a PhD scholarship in Computer Science in Austria. Available fields include the following:

Computational Logic: Proof theory, computational complexity and automated deduction.
Databases/Artificial Intelligence: Application of logic to databases and artificial intelligence.
Verification: Computer-aided verification, in particular model checking.
Security and Privacy

Eligibility Criteria:

Applications from all countries are welcome.
Applicants must hold a Master of Science or an equivalent degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or related fields, with an excellent record of study.
Applicants with comparable achievements (e.g., bachelorof honors) may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Previous knowledge in the areas of the doctoral college (computational logic, databases/artificial intelligence, verification) is desirable but not required.
In the years 2018-2022, the doctoral college will admit 16 PhD students where 30% of the positions are reserved for female applicants .
Applicants may state their preference for an adviser or research field in the admission form. Assignment to the PhD adviser and one or more co-advisers should be decided at the point of admission to the program.
Non-native English speakers need to ensure that their English proficiency meets the doctoral program’s requirements to fully benefit from their courses. The doctoral program encourages applicants to provide the following tests/scores for English language qualifications: TOEFL score of at least 550 paper-based, 217 computer-based or 81 internet-based, IELTS score 6.0 or higher, CAE score B or higher.

Benefits and Funding:

Employment: This scholarship is funded by the Austrian Science Fund, as doctoral students will be employed as researchers at a yearly salary of €21,284.48 after taxes and social/health insurance deductions. There are additional salary supplements and tax deductions for families with children.
Insurance: Austria has a compulsory social security system, which provides accident and health insurance as well as retirement and social benefits.
Tuition fees: Full tuition fees are covered for four years.
Work space: All students will be provided with office space and a PC at their respective institutions. The facilities are equipped with recently renovated meeting rooms, student lounges, libraries, and kitchens which encourage social interaction.
Relocation and visa arrangements: As a consequence of their employment as a researcher, students from non-EU countries will obtain a residence permit for researchers. They are eligible to apply for a relocation grant covering up to €2,000. The team at the university has ample experience in supporting visa applications, search for student housing, and other practical issues of student life in Austria.
Joint courses: Students of each of the participating institutions are entitled to participate in courses at the respective other universities. This will be encouraged by providing intensive courses (e.g., duration of two weeks, with a schedule comparable to a summer school) held every year.
Dual-Career support: The spouses of the students are eligible for a work permit in Austria, and will be invited to social activities organized by the program.
Gender mainstreaming: To enhance the careers of female students, the university will provide special meetings for networking and mentoring, where students will be informed about programs specifically targeting female researchers.
Childcare: Vienna University of Technology is running a bilingual Kindergarten (open 7am-7pm), with 80 children, divided into 4 groups (age 1-6). The Kindergarten is located within 5 minutes walking distance of the university.
