The National Parks Arts Foundation (NPAF) in association with Chaco Culture National Historical Park of the National Park Service offers a residency with a stipend of $1000 in northwest New Mexico. Comprising eleven beautifully preserved pueblos or ceremonial structures, Chaco Canyon is the premier site to experience the amazing and mysterious Chacoan culture. The residencies are open to all artists working in any media. So, Video Art, Installation, Collage, Photo-manipulation, Sound Sculpture, Performance, Dance, Screen dance, are encouraged, anything that can free the mind, widen experience and still connect people to the Park experience in tangible and intangible ways.
The Conditions:
- For ease of coordination and communication with the Park Service, Artists or Artist couples must schedule their arrival between 3-10 on federal workdays and must have their own transportation for the month of the residency.
- The Artist’s public presentation will take place in the Auditorium at the Park’s Visitor’s Center. Please indicate in your application if you would like to give more public presentation(s), while a resident at the park.
- The artist must commit to the entire month term that they will be applying for.
- If the program is canceled before commencement, no refunds of any fees, including application fees, will be issued.
- The Artist acknowledges that if their work includes a scientific or cultural component that involves advice or information from Park Staff or any of the archeological or anthropological research programs around the Chaco Culture park resources, it is their responsibility to contract separately for such.
- Artists may present, at minimum one, one-hour public program, workshop, concert or lecture during their residency at Chaco Culture National Historic Park, which can be presented either at the park or another venue as deemed by NPAF.
- Artists need to provide their own art supplies, equipment, personal items, and reliable transportation.
- Artists should be self-sufficient, independent and enjoy working in an isolated environment.
- The artist is expected to comply with all park regulations and policies governing park employees, volunteers and visitors.
Participation Fees:
- Participation fees of $55 should be paid for the single artist contribution.
- Participation fees of $110 should be paid for artist couple distribution.
Benefits:
- A stipend of $1000.
- The artist in residence will be granted a venue for at least one Public Presentation of a workshop, lecture or concert.
- The stay will be in a park that is a Dark Skies certified location, one of the ideal places for astronomy, astrophotography and other Night Sky artistic practice.

Accommodations: Living quarters are comfortable and suitable for a single artist or a couple.
Timetable:
- The first residency dates are (April 1st- April 30th ) 2020.
- The deadline for applying to the first residency is on November 1th, 2019.
- The notification of the first residency will be on November 20th, 2019.
- The second residency dates are (October 1st- October 30th ) 2020.
- The deadline for applying to the second residency is on November 15th, 2019.
- The notification of the second residency will be on December 5th, 2019.
