The University of Gothenburg offers a job opportunity as a Research Associate (RA) within its Governance and Local Development Program (GLD). The RA will be primarily responsible for supporting the team of the GLD program in research-related functions and assist in coordinating activities for a major research grant on local governance and decentralization in Oman. 

Requirements:

  1. Strong background in the Omani government and demonstrated an interest in subnational governance.
  2. Demonstrated reading and writing proficiency in both Arabic and English.
  3. Master’s Degree is Preferred.
  4. Strong organizational and research skills.
  5. Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build rapport with a wide range of audience (e.g. stakeholders, government officials, academic and policy circles)
  6. Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Responsibilities:

Administrative Support (25% of total time):

  1. Assist GLD research staff in preparations for public events, both regionally and domestically.
  2. Coordinate fieldwork activities, mainly interviews and focus groups.
  3. Provide GLD researchers with logistical support in Oman as needed.
  4. Identify and communicate with key stakeholders in Oman.
  5. Managing required research approvals, such as institutional review board (IRB) and government approvals.

Research Support (75% of total time):

  1. Conduct research, including literature reviews, the gathering of background information, and preparation of datasets in Arabic and English as needed.
  2. Collect data on local governance in Oman and The Middle East and North Africa 'MENA' from both Arabic and English sources.
  3. Draft, proofread and edit written work in Arabic and English.
  4. Synthesize Arabic and English news articles and publications.

Required Fields:

Social sciences, Middle Eastern Studies, International Affairs, or a related field.

Employment:

  • The type of employment is fixed-term 12 months with the possibility of extension. Extent 50-100% to be determined.
  • Start date as soon as possible.
  • Salary is determined on an individual basis.

About GLD Program:

The Program on Governance and Local Development (GLD) is a research program based at the University of Gothenburg, originally founded in 2013 at Yale University. GLD focuses on the local factors driving governance and development. The program is dedicated to international collaboration and scientifically rigorous, policy-relevant research in an effort to promote human welfare globally. Program findings are made available to the international and domestic communities through academic publications, policy briefs, public presentations, and social media, as well as on-the-ground workshops in cooperation with local partners.
