The University of Canterbury is offering several research doctoral scholarships for national and international students in New Zealand for 2019-2020, under the name “Brownlie Scholarship”. The scholarship was established in 1998 in recognition of the outstanding contribution to the development of the University of Canterbury by Professor Albert Brownlie, Vice-Chancellor 1977-1998 and Head of Economics 1965-1977.

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. The scholarship is tenable for study towards a research doctoral degree at the University and will be offered to the first-ranked candidate for a University of Canterbury Doctoral Scholarship.
  2. An application for a University of Canterbury Doctoral Scholarship constitutes an application for the Brownlie Scholarship; separate applications are not accepted.
  3. The regulations for the Brownlie Scholarship are the same as for the University of Canterbury Doctoral Scholarship, except that the offer of the Brownlie Scholarship is made only once a year, in December.
  4. Top-ranked candidates who have been selected for a University of Canterbury Doctoral Scholarship after having applied in May of the same year will be automatically considered for the Brownlie Scholarship, in competition with candidates applying in October for a University of Canterbury Doctoral Scholarship. If such a candidate accepts an offer of the Brownlie Scholarship, the University of Canterbury Doctoral Scholarship will terminate and the tenure of the former scholarship will be backdated to the earlier scholarship commencement date with commensurate adjustment of the emolument.
  5. Normally, tenure of the Brownlie Scholarship will be for the period necessary for a student to complete up to 360 points of enrolment from the date on which the recipient takes up the scholarship. In the case of a student already enrolled for a doctoral degree at the University, the term of the stipend will be reduced by any period in excess of 60 points that the recipient has already completed for the degree at the time that either the Brownlie Scholarship or a University of Canterbury Doctoral Scholarship is conferred.

Scholarship Amount:

The scholarship provides financial assistance to a value of NZ$26,000 per 120 points of enrolment. In addition to the stipend, the scholarship covers tuition fees for the doctoral program at the domestic rate.
