The University of British Columbia offers a UBC Killam Fellowship for post-doctoral research. This fellowship is awarded annually to three or five people from around the world in different fields of research. This fellowship aims to support advanced education and research at five Canadian universities and the Canada Council for the Arts.

Value:

  • $50,000 annual stipend for a maximum of two years.
  • Travel research allowance of $4,000 over two years.

Note: Research trips do not exceed three months per year of fellowship.

Eligibility Criteria: 

  1. The applicant must complete all the requirements of his Ph.D. no more than 24 months prior to the anticipated fellowship start date. This date is the date on which the applicant completed all the steps required to obtain the degree, including thesis defense corrections and thesis deposition.

Note: This period can be extended for a maximum of one year if the applicant stops his or her career due to having children or the illness of the applicant or a member of the family, provided that the applicant completes all the requirements for obtaining the degree before stopping.

  1. Has not studied a Ph.D. in any of the colleges of the University of British Columbia.
  2. must not currently hold a continuing faculty position at any university.
  3. must be able to meet all Canadian immigration requirements.

Evaluation Criteria:

Evaluation is distributed on three points:

Excellence in research and independent research (60%) includes:

  • Quality of contributions to research to date.
  • Scholarships and awards held.
  • Duration of graduate studies taking into account the nature of the program and personal circumstances.
  • Determination and ability to complete projects within a specified time.
  • Critical thinking, judgment, originality, initiative, and autonomy.

Quality of the proposed research project (30%) includes:

  • The merit, relevance, and feasibility of the proposed project.
  • The candidate's practical experience and academic training to the field of the proposed research.
  • The suitability of the project with the research environment in terms of availability of the appropriate supervisor and the necessary facilities and support the academic unit.

Personal qualities of the candidate (10%):

  • Character: integrity, collegiality, and respect for others.
  • Communication skills.
  • Leadership abilities.
  • Athletic/artistic achievements, community engagement, and volunteering.

Note: Preference is given to applicants who have never received a fellowship or a postdoctoral award.
