The University of Canterbury and in cooperation with The Ethel Rose Overton Scholarships is offering scholarships tenable for full-time postgraduate study at the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts, Art History or Art Theory with Bachelor, Masters, and Ph.D. programs.

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. No specific nationality is required to be eligible for this opportunity.
  2. Students who wish to apply for this scholarship must demonstrate their willingness and admission into a related program.

Terms and Conditions:

  1. No student who has previously held an Ethel Rose Overton Scholarship shall be barred from applying for a further scholarship.
  2. The Ethel Rose Overton Scholarship may be held with any other award provided the regulations pertaining to the other award allow it, and provided also that the Council may reduce the value of an Ethel Rose Overton Scholarship after considering the total value of any other awards held.
  3. The annual emolument of each scholarship shall be paid in three equal installments in mid-April, mid-July, and mid-September.
    A scholarship may be terminated by the Council at any time on receipt of a report from the Programme Coordinators of Fine Arts and Art History and Theory that the conduct or the progress of a student has been unsatisfactory.
  4. Applications for the scholarships should be made on the appropriate form to the Scholarships Office of the University of Canterbury no later than 5.00 p.m. on 1 November
  5. The annual emolument of each scholarship shall be paid in three equal installments in mid-April, mid-July, and mid-September.
  6. The length of tenure shall normally be as follows: 
    • One year for students enrolled for BFA (Hons), BA (Hons), MFA, or MA (Part I or II).
    • Up to three years, subject to satisfactory performance, for students enrolled for Ph.D.

Benefits:

The University of Canterbury is offering a number of scholarships with the following values:

  • $ 3,000 per annum for students enrolled for BA (Hons), or MA (Part I)
  • $ 5,000 per annum for a student enrolled for BFA (Hons) or MA (Part II)
  •  $ 7,500 per annum for a student enrolled for MFA
  • $ 10,000 per annum for a student enrolled for Ph.D.

When established in 1873, Canterbury College, as the University was originally known, was only the second university in New Zealand. The University now has five Colleges: Arts, Education, Health and Human Development, Engineering, Science, Business and Law.
