The MONSTRA Festival invites all those interested in the production of animated films to apply for the 2020 edition, which will be held between 18-29 March 2020.

Festival Goal:

The Festival’s main goal is to present and promote the best-animated films made all over the World.

Categories:

Films are admitted in the following categories:

  • Feature Films.
  • Short Films.
  • Student Short Films.
  • Super Short Films.
  • Short Films for Children and Youth.
  • Series.

Eligibility Criteria:

Animation: It is eligible for any film created frame by frame, in any technique (analogical, digital or mixed). Animated sequences must correspond to a minimum of 60% of the total duration of the film.

Length:

  • Feature Films should be longer than 45 minutes.
  • Short Films and Series should not be longer than 44 minutes.
  • Student Short Films should not be longer than 30 minutes.
  • Short Films for Children and Youth should not be longer than 30 minutes.
  • Super Short Films should not be longer than 2 minutes, not including the final credits.

Date of production: Feature Films should be finished after January 1st, 2018. The films on all the remaining categories should be finished after October 1st, 2018. Applicants whose films are not finished by the deadline for submission, but that foresee the work to be finished by December 31st, 2019, can submit the film by sending a preview screener and contact the organization so both parties can reach an agreement to validate the submission. The organization can accept or decline the submission, depending on the state of the conclusion of work.

Language:

Films with dialogue, commentaries or written text in a language other than English must have English subtitles included and its dialogue list in English or Portuguese must be sent as well.

Note: Official film copies must be sent in one of the following formats:

  • DCP
  • Digital file – ProRes 4444 or 422, DNxHD, H264 or H265
  • Blu-ray or DVD

Awards:

Feature Film Competition:

  • Grand-Prix MONSTRA: the Best feature film.
  • Jury Special Award.
  • Best Soundtrack.
  • Best Feature Film for Children and Youth.

Short Film Competition:

  • Grand-Prix MONSTRA: Best short film.
  • Jury Special Award.
  • Best Portuguese Short Film.
  • Best Soundtrack.
  • Best Experimental Film.

Student Short Film Competition:

  • Best Student Short Film.
  • Best Portuguese Student Short Film.
  • Best Student Short Film – Jury Junior.
  • Best Portuguese Student Short Film – Jury Junior.

Super Short Film:

  • Best Super Short Film.
  • Best Portuguese Super Short Film.

Short Films for Children and Youth Competition:

  • Grand-Prix MONSTRINHA: Best short film for children and youth.

Series Competition:

  • Best Series.
  • Best Series for Children and Youth.

Other Rules:

  • Films previously submitted to this festival will not be considered eligible.
  • For the Series category, the applicant must submit a minimum of three episodes.
  • The applicant should not charge screening fees to the festival, regarding the screening of films in competition.
  • In each category, the jury may apply as many honorable mentions as they decide.
  • In each category, except for the Super Short Film Competition, there will also be an Audience Award.
  • In each competition, there is one winner for each award. Only the honorable mentions can be attributed to more than one film in each category.
  • All awards are a trophy or a certificate.
  • The jury may decide not to grant an award if they consider there is no candidate worth that award.
  • The awards with a monetary prize will be announced on the festival’s website in February 2020.

About:

The Lisbon Animation Festival "MONSTRA" is an annual event where animated film meets other media, aiming to present, disseminate, and discuss ideas, crossing over new artistic approaches and forms, on which animated film is the narrative and aesthetic expression. Each edition MONSTRA focus on a guest country with retrospectives and curatorships of several authors on a guest country.
