You develop a research programme in the field of sexual & family ethics and/or environmental ethics and achieve scientific results at international level. You make an important contribution to the efforts of Faculty and Research Unit to obtain research funding and develop national and international partnerships.

Being an interdisciplinary expert in the relation between theology/religion and ethics, you are able to conduct research from a Christian ethical perspective, focusing on sexual & family ethics and/or environmental ethics. You strive for close intra- and interdisciplinary collaboration within the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies and with other faculties inside and outside the Humanities and Social Sciences Group. Your research will be situated within both the Flemish, Belgian, European and global context characterized by diverse religious, ideological, ethical, theological and scientific traditions.

You provide high-quality teaching in English and Dutch in a number of disciplines in theological ethics, including sexual and family ethics, and are explicitly committed to the quality of the programme as a whole. In your teaching you pay scientific attention to the current state of ethical and theological research and seek to strike a balance between local, contextual and global perspectives.

You supervise Master's theses and take an active role as supervisor of doctoral students.

You develop your teaching in accordance with KU Leuven's vision of student-activating and research-based teaching and make use of the opportunities for educational professionalization provided by the Faculty and the University.

You will be expected to provide scientific services as part of your academic duties and internal administrative and managerial services to Faculty and University. More particularly, you will be expected to participate actively in public debate regarding themes linked to your fields of expertise.

You hold the degree of Doctor (STD) or PhD in Theology.

You have an excellent research record in sexual & family ethics and/or environmental ethics as demonstrated in publications in international journals and involvement in research groups and networks.

You have a very good knowledge of the ethical teaching of the Christian churches in general, and of Catholic ethics in particular and a demonstrable expertise in fundamental moral theology. You are open to ethical views of other world religions and engage in dialogue with secular and empirical approaches in sexual & family ethics and/or environmental ethics.

You possess demonstrable qualities for academic teaching. Teaching experience is clearly an asset.

You combine good social skills with a collegial attitude and are an effective communicator. You are empathic regarding the diversity of your student population and possess leadership capacities that you are willing to apply in the context of both Faculty and University.

A good knowledge of Dutch and a very good knowledge of English is required. Knowledge of other languages (French, German, Latin) is an important asset.

The official administrative language used at KU Leuven is Dutch. If you do not speak Dutch (or do not speak it well) at the start of employment, KU Leuven will provide language training to enable you to take part in administrative meetings. Before teaching courses in Dutch, you will be given the opportunity to learn Dutch to the required standard.
