The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) offers a Visiting Scientist Program (VSP) for early career scientists and recent graduates to participate in forensic science research at the FBI Laboratory. One of the largest and most comprehensive crime laboratories in the world, the FBI Lab's research program welcomes postgraduates and faculty on sabbatical interested in a unique work experience. Program participants perform research in areas of interest unique to law enforcement and national security under the guidance of leading forensic scientists. Participants receive monthly stipends commensurate with their educational level and a training and travel allowance. This program is at the FBI Laboratory in Quantico, Virginia. Postgraduate appointments are normally for one year and may be renewed for the equivalent of a total of five years of full-time participation. Student appointments are normally for 10-12 weeks during the summer. Part-time appointments during the academic year are also possible. University faculty appointments normally occur for 10-12 weeks during the summer. Sabbatical appointments are also possible.

Eligibility: Applicants must: be U.S. citizens be in compliance with the FBI Employment Drug Policy either: have a bachelor's degree or higher* from a U.S.-accredited college or university in an appropriate science (chemistry, geology, and other physical sciences; biology and related disciplines; statistics; or forensic science); or be a faculty member at a U.S. accredited college or university have health insurance coverage (can be obtained through ORISE) successfully complete an extensive FBI background investigation *Degree must have been earned within five years of admittance into the VSP
