Description

The School of History at the University of East Anglia invites applications from outstanding PhD candidates for studentships funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council as part of the CHASE Doctoral Training Partnership. There will also be studentships funded by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.

The School of History at UEA is a leading centre for the study of the history of Russia, Eastern and South Eastern Europe. It has a vibrant research community in these areas, with regular research seminars and a lively group of doctoral students working on a broad range of topics relating to the period since 1800.

UEA is a member of the CHASE consortium, a group of nine institutions which has been awarded funding by the Arts and Humanities Research Council to support postgraduate studentships and training. CHASE offers an outstanding environment for doctoral study, with opportunities to draw on the resources of the whole consortium.

Eligibility

  • CHASE AHRC studentships are open to UK and EU students who meet the residency requirements set out in the RCUK Conditions of Research Council Training Grants;
  • For eligibility criteria for full awards please refer to the UK Council for International Student Affairs website;
  • Students from EU countries other than the UK are generally eligible for a fees-only award. To be eligible for a fees-only award, a student must be ordinarily resident in a member state of the EU, in the same way as UK students must be ordinarily resident in the UK;
  • At the current time, EU students are eligible for support from CHASE. Applicants from EU countries will be notified immediately of any change in status as a result of UK government policy;
  • If you have already started doctoral study, you may still be eligible for an AHRC studentship funding providing that, at the start of the AHRC award, you will have at least 50% of your period of study remaining.

Scholarship

Successful applicants will have their fees paid, as well as receiving a stipend to cover living expenses and access to further funds for skills training and research.  In addition, CHASE-funded students have the opportunity of doing a placement with one of our partner organisations, to apply research skills in a work environment.

How to apply?

To be eligible for the stipend, you firstly need to apply online for Postgraduate study.

For further information, applicants are encouraged to contact Professor Peter Waldron (Russian Studies) – p.waldron@uea.ac.uk and Professor Cathie Carmichael (Eastern and South Eastern European Studies) – cathie.carmichael@uea.ac.uk
