The Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IIE) at SMU University announces it's 10th Global Business Plan Competition, Lee Kuan Yew, entitled “Reimagining of Smart, Sustainable and Resilient Cities” for different sectors in the field of sustainable urban innovation. Current students or new graduates from less than 5 years can apply for this opportunity, which includes applicable technologies that facilitate solutions for different sectors such as blockchain, virtual reality, data analytics, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, 5G technology, robotics, and others.

Eligibility:

Pre-revenue teams with disruptive technology or business model innovations must be careful about these rules:

  1. This department of the competition includes technology innovations that have emerged from academic research with commercialization opportunities that may or may not be fully validated.
  2. It also includes innovative business models that may or may not be fully validated and team with an initial phase of the idea up to having a minimum viable product (MVP) that has yet to be launched in the market.
  3. Each team/startup must have at least a founding member/founder, who is a current student or recent alumni of less than 5 years.
  4. “Current student” is defined as any person who is enrolled in a full-time polytechnic, undergraduate, postgraduate, or PhD at a tertiary institute.
  5. “Recent alumni” is defined as any person who graduated or left school after 1 January 2015.
  6. There is no restriction on the number of members in a team or company.

Early-stage of revenue-generating start-ups, up to Series A must be careful about these rules:

  1. A startup must be in phases of initial sales or looking to scale.
  2. Typically, product or service has launched in the market, and is seeking their next customer(s) and/or to enter a new market.
  3. Each team/startup must have at least a founding member / founder, who is a current student or recent alumni of less than 5 years.
  4. “Current student” is defined as any person who is enrolled in a full-time polytechnic, undergraduate, postgraduate, or PhD at a tertiary institute.
  5. “Recent alumni” is defined as any person who graduated or left school after 1 January 2015.
  6. There is no restriction on the number of members in a team or company.

Judging Criteria:

Teams will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Innovation.
  • Commercial Feasibility.
  • Impact of Idea.
  • Capability to Execute.

Prize:

  1. Two representatives from the shortlisted 100 teams will be invited to participate in the week-long Global Young Innovators Summit where their meals and accommodations are covered.
  2. Two representatives from RVLT 50 will be awarded with an all-expense-paid trip for a 1-week immersion program in Singapore.
