Fellowship for Undergraduate Students to Develop their Leadership Skills 2020

The United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) and the Millennium Campus Network (MCN) offer a fellowship for undergraduate students with leadership skills. This fellowship is a semester-long leadership development program, which will take place in campuses around the world and 8-20 fellows will be selected in each campus.

About the Program:

In Fellowship sessions (a minimum of 8 convenings between August and November), Millennium Fellows convene on their respective campuses. During these sessions, Campus Directors will lead the fellows through the MCN Action Toolkit - an adaptive curriculum to help them reflect on core values, hone skills, and take informed action for UN goals. The curriculum is experiential - it is meant to be applied to help them grow as a leader in real-time as they manage their Project. As a campus hub, fellow will get exposed to a variety of elements during the Fellowship sessions as part of the the MCN Action Toolkit:

  • Cultivating core values (empathy, humility, inclusion).
  • Honing hard skills (how to write a budget, create SMART goals).
  • Honing soft skills (team management, pitching his Project).
  • Peer to peer feedback - sharing best practices to help each other overcome obstacles to their Project and exploring further opportunities for collaboration.

Fellow will take on the challenge - engaging in peer to peer feedback to support Projects of his peers as he lead his own. As a campus hub, fellow may also choose to take on a collective action - for example, working with his administration to update a campus sustainability plan. If he have been an active Millennium Fellow and completed his Project, the program will celebrate his work: the fellow will earn a certificate recognizing successful completion of his Millennium Fellowship Project from United Nations Academic Impact and MCN. United Nations Academic Impact and MCN are also looking forward to hearing and sharing fellows' stories of impact advancing the SDGs and UNAI principles in their communities - fellow must reflect and share videos/photos/articles of what he have learned and accomplished through this program.

Eligibility:

  • Applicant must be at least 18 years old, an undergraduate enrolled in a college or university, and in good standing at that academic institution for the duration of the program.
  • The Millennium Fellowship program is open for undergraduate students only. Graduate students are not eligible.
  • Fellow make a commitment to convene in-person least eight times during the Millennium Fellowship with his Campus Directors and other Fellows on his campus to share best practices and take collective action. Students have to meet on-campus, in-person for the Fellowship sessions. If the fellow miss sessions, this is grounds for expulsion and the forfeiture of his designation as a Millennium Fellow.

Note: The program aims to accept at least eight Millennium Fellows from each Campus Hub (with two Campus Directors). Most Campus Hubs will typically have 8-20 Millennium Fellows. The Fellowship is about forming community; therefore the program encourage applicants to share the program with other prospective Fellows on their campus and encourage them to apply as well.
