UNRWA offers a job opportunity as a Special Assistant to the Deputy Commissioner to join the team in Amman, Jordan for 2020. 

Responsibilities include: 

  1. Ensuring optimal preparation for and follow up from DCG ‘s contacts with internal and external interlocutors.
  2. Undertaking research and writing on a wide range of general administrative, financial and operational issues of concern to the office of the Commissioner-General.
  3. Drafting, for review and signature by the DCG, correspondence on matters of concern to the Commissioner-General’s Office.
  4. Following-up as required on the implementation of decisions and on other matters referred by the Commissioner-General and the Deputy Commissioner-General to departments and offices at headquarters and the fields and contributing to optimal flow of information to, from and within the Executive Office.
  5. Managing consultancy contracts on behalf of the Office of the Commissioner-General.
  6. Maintaining contacts and liaison with UN offices, specialized agencies, non-governmental organizations and other external UNRWA interlocutors.
  7.  Representing the Office of the Commissioner-General and/or UNRWA at meetings and conferences.
  8. Providing advice and assistance on organizational and managerial effectiveness and efficiency.
  9. Acting as secretary for specific meetings.

Qualifications:

  1. Advanced university degree (
    Master’s or equivalent) from an accredited educational institution in public or business administration, social sciences, law or a related discipline; a first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree. 
  2. A minimum of eight years of progressively responsible and relevant experience, including a minimum of 3 continuous years of relevant international experience outside UNRWA, and outside the country(s) of which the candidate is a national or holds citizenship, a passport or a national identity number.
  3. Excellent knowledge of and experience with the use of new digital tools, the full range of IT-platforms etc. Language(s) Excellent command of written and spoken English.
  4. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations in a multi-cultural, multiethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
  5. Ability to independently plan and prioritize own work, work well under tight deadlines and handle multiple concurrent activities.
  6. Positive attitude and strong analytical, interpersonal and communication skills.
  7. Proven excellence in drafting, particularly in analytical writing, report writing and written communication on policy, operational and organizational development matters.
  8. High level of political and organizational awareness.
  9. Proven ability to exercise initiative and resourcefulness necessary for prioritizing multiple clusters/components.
  10. Ability to develop clear goals and identify priority activities and assignments.
  11. Knowledge of contemporary issues of the Middle East.

Benefits:

UNRWA offers an attractive compensation package including annual salary starting at $73,516 net tax free with post adjustment of 44.6% (subject to change without notice). Other benefits include:

About UNRWA:

Following the 1948 Arab-Palestinei conflict, UNRWA was established by United Nations General Assembly Resolution 302 (IV) of 8 December 1949 to carry out direct relief and works programs for Palestine refugees. The Agency began operations on 1 May 1950. In the absence of a solution to the Palestine refugee problem, the General Assembly has repeatedly renewed UNRWA's mandate, most recently extending it until 30 June 2020. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions from the UN Member States. UNRWA also receives some funding from the Regular Budget of the United Nations, which is used mostly for international staffing costs. The Agency’s services encompass education, health care, relief, and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, microfinance and emergency assistance, including in times of armed conflict.
